From a vineyard on Howell Mountain (formerly owned by Krug/Mondavi) and vines planted in 2004, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Cold Springs Vineyard has a meaty, bloody character to go with classic Howell Mountain notes of bouquet garni, dark chocolate, and ripe black fruits. This puppy has full-bodied richness, lots of tannins, beautiful overall balance, and a great finish. It's not, however, for the instant gratification crowd. Hide bottles for 4-6 years if you can, and it should evolve for two decades.

One of my favorite Revana bottlings is the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Cold Springs Vineyard, from a vineyard on Howell Mountain planted by Jim Barbour for the Charles Krug Mondavis. Scents of blueberry and pine lead the way, accented by hints of sage and cola. Full-bodied, this is rich, concentrated and tannic but ripe, with a long, lingering finish and ample freshness.

Winery Notes

Ten barrels were produced from 20 year old vines high above the Napa Valley between 1,600 and 1,800 feet in elevation. The Cold Springs Vineyard was hand selected by Thomas Rivers Brown for its powerful yet nuanced expressions of mountain terroir.

Located above the fog line on a southwest facing slope, grapes grown here are exposed to higher levels of UV light which results in smaller berries and concentrated flavors. These factors combine with rocky topsoil resulting in elevated stress on the vines and diminished yields. Growing conditions such as these define the Howell Mountain Appellation and produce Cabernet Sauvignon grapes with powerful tannins and exquisite complexity.
