In a government study released recently stating over 4% of adults in the U.S. have admitted to falling asleep behind the wheel at least one time within the last month while driving.  Some earlier studies reached a similar conclusion, but the survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was far larger. The study also found that drowsy drivers are more common among men between the ages of 25 and 34.

According to another survey, 1 out of 24 adults have fallen asleep while driving.  147,000 adults participated in this survey done in 2009/2010. With these statistics, many officials think the number is actually higher, but many people do not realize they have fallen asleep while behind the wheel.

We all know that distracted driving can lead to catastrophic car accidents. Texting, eating and drinking behind the wheel are very dangerous and they get a lot of press. Falling asleep at the wheel is no different. There needs to be precautions taken in order to keep all drivers safe while on the road. Those who are falling asleep behind the wheel shouldn’t be behind the wheel in the first place, and of course our CT law does not permit such wrongful conduct making a drowsy driver liable in money damages to the innocent people they harm.

With so many of us working long hours and trying to fit in so much into our daily routines can this be prevented? Is there a way to put a stop to this? Technology that can detect when someone is drifting into another lane could be helpful, but ultimately, like choosing not to drink and drive, or to not drive at an excessive speed, drivers need to be responsible for their actions and not get in a car if they have feel about drowsy prior to driving. This will help save their lives and those innocent drivers around them.

Unfortunately too often we have seen the great havoc that “sleepy drivers” can cause upon the lives of our clients who have suffered catastrophic injuries, losses and damages due to the reckless behavior of these drowsy drivers. Through the years, we at Tindall Law Firm, LLC have fought successfully on behalf of these unfortunate victims so they receive the compensation which they deserve for the egregious safety violations committed by these sleepy drivers.
